A City with No Name
When Buchan completed one of his first Cityscapes, an art patron asked him if the piece was a depiction of New York City. The client incorrectly assumed that the artist had copied a rendering of the Big Apple.
Buchan replied, "Sure, it can be New York, if you want it to be." The artist explained to the client that the City could very well be New York, since it was an amalgamation of the many urban centers that have been imprinted upon his mind's eye.
Thereafter, Buchan decided to keep it simple, and began using the title Gotham City for the many urbanscapes that followed.
